Explosion Proof Operay Multi-beam C. 1948
Explosion Proof Operay Multi-beam C. 1948
To find an Operay Multibeam complete with original color is a very rare occurrence . I have been looking for these lights well over a decade and this is the first time a complete explosion proof lamp was available (Came out of a now demolished hospital in Southern Mississippi) . This lamp was the predecessor of the 1930’s aluminum Operay which is beautifully designed but caused sparks with volatile gasses during surgery (Oxygen, Ether, Cylon etc.) and caused explosions. With innovation of certain materials and non conductive rubber this new model was developed fully housed and explosion proof. The Operay was a coveted lamp for surgical procedures because inside the lamp concave mirrors focus the light trough the lenses and reflect off the mirror creating a shadowless light source. The lamp can pivot in many positions with its four axis , and the control knob adjusts the pitch of the lamp.
The Operay is in excellent condition with natural wear to the original paint. The lenses are clean and clear and some oxidation is seen on the mirror plates (one mirror has an age old chip in the edge) . The mirror plates can come off via a C tension clamp if you choose to replace , but why would you—the age on the piece is great. The flush mount has two Crouse Hinds lamps for ambient light in a beautiful Deco tiered flush mount caps. Measures: 40” drop from top of flush mount to center point (various adjustable pivots on the lamp) 77” Long from mirror to back of counter weight.
Wire leads are present for easy hardwiring to electrical box. Uses any standard bulb of your choice—piece is shown with 50w incandescent standard bulbs.
