AbioCor Artificial Heart Sizer Model
AbioCor Artificial Heart Sizer Model
The AbioCor total artificial heart was a fully implantable artificial heart developed by Massachusetts based company AbioMed. The heart which was only introduced into 15 total patients —14 during a clinical trial and one after FDA approval. However, due to insufficient evidence of its efficacy, AbioMed abandoned further development of the device.
I have been looking for the AbioCor for many years and was finally fortunate enough to have made contact with a cardiothoracic surgeon that was one of a very few that performed a transplantation of the AbioCor Heart. This object that I have obtained is a sizing model of the exact proportions that was used in planning the surgery . The model comes with the snap-on cuffs that are the actual Abiocor interface connectors along with the catheter that is used to evacuate the air during implantation. A remarkable and rare historic item that contributes to the progress of heart research devices to aid those in end stage heart failure.
This item came from the surgeons personal heart collection archive library, and is a select group of objects I obtained as the rest are slated to be donated to the Smithsonian.
Sold as a historical collectible for study and reference.
