1930's Bill 'Willie' Honeman Silver plated Bronze Trophy Topper
Cycling Hall fo Famer Bill ‘Willie’ Honeman really set a standard in early racing. Not only was Bill a champion racer he campaigned for safety helmet use in the early days to protect fellow riders. He was so influential and beloved that he was a model for all ABL and NCA racing trophies in the 1930’s. This piece is cast in bronze and silver plated. Some plated areas are worn down in places and you can see the bronze. Measures: 4.25” x 3.75” H . A very beautifully detailed piece and a significant sculpture in its own right. *’Bill broke a lot of ground for other cyclists to follow. He was the first American to wear a stars-and-stripes jersey as the national champion (before Willie they just draped a flag over the riders shoulders at the podium ceremony)…
Bill achieved an interesting little bit of immortality in bronze— his likeness is found on the top of all of the ABL and NCA racing trophies. Bill was inducted into the U.S Bicycling Hall of Fame in 1994.’
