In the late 1920s, the US was looking to improve and develop upon the MI diaphragm gas mask. The Army began experimenting with new types of diaphragm face pieces. This mask is the MII Diaphragm mask that is a rather early production model. The canvas laminated rubber is a brown color vs the black later production models. The metal bifurcated breathing piece goes in the inner lenses to help prevent fogging in various climates. Various minor adjustments were developed and improved until ultimately this type of mask was discontinued in 1944. Take a look at the photo set of these masks in action— as they have beautiful and haunting presence.
