1960's Wind Tunnel Nose Cone Model
1960's Wind Tunnel Nose Cone Model
Heavily constructed in aluminum with a copper tip this wind tunnel model was most likely for high velocity transonic nose cone testing C.1960 . I have seen models this size with similar characteristics and remind me of the NASA ‘Little Joe’ model I had a few years ago. The piece comes apart in three sections via threads and you can see various attachment points for testing.
You can see the thin paint on the upper area showing some of the copper peeking though the paint from high velocity testing. The top part slips onto the main body but does not have an attachment point. The rest of the upper cone is very precisely machined and threaded into three components.
I have acquired a nice grouping of these models recently that date from late 1950-early 1960’s .
The model is 38” from base of stand to tip making it one of the largest models of this type that I’ve had in many years. Photo sets that follow are from Langley showing similar tests on cones from this period that are either rocket tests and or missile cone tests.
Comes with custom steel base that is 10” x 10” square
