C.1960's Advanced Terrier Rare Large Contractor Model
A very unique and rare model of an advanced Terrier missile. The model is very large and measures 38.5” H with a heavy wooden base with brass placard 10” diameter. The piece itself is rather heavy weighing in at almost 20 lbs and is made of brass—has a few oxidation spots. The third picture featured with the dental phantom head is to show scale and is listed separately . Information below is compiled from the Smithsonian and the Naval museum:
‘Advanced Terrier, a U.S. Navy ship-launched anti-aircraft missile built by General Dynamics. It had a conventional warhead, a solid-fuel motor, a maximum speed of about Mach 2.5, a range of over 21 miles, and a ceiling of 65,000 feet. First deployed in the early 1960s, the missile continued in service into the 1970s.’
‘Advanced Terrier Has Double Air Defense Effectiveness. The Advanced Terrier Surface to Air Guided Missile is in production at Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant, Pomona, California, operated by Convair/Pomona, Convair Division of General Dynamics Corporation. Advanced Terrier will be primary anti aircraft armament on 29 U.S. Navy Warships both nuclear and conventionally powered. Like original Terrier operational with U.S. fleet units since early 1956, Advanced Terrier is a supersonic missile powered by two stages of solid fuel rockets. Advanced Terrier will double performance of original terrier defense against air attack. Convair Division of General Dynamics Corporation.’
