The SR-71 flies at Mach 3 so the inlet cones, also called spikes, help create shock waves to compress the air to make the engines work at high speed. These historical unique components are scaled down wind tunnel test models that were used at AMES NASA testing facility to conduct supersonic testing. If you look closely you can see the wear on the cones from the high friction tests. The spikes measures 5.5” H and come displayed on a steel platform as shown.
